World record attempt from Mogan

Ocean Row Events ChallengerPuerto de Mogan will be basking in the gaze of the European press over the next couple of months as a descendant of Christopher Colombus prepares his boat and crew for an assault on the Atlantic crossing record for rowers.

Scotsman Leven Brown will be setting off on the near 3,000 mile journey to Barbados, West Indies on December 15 in the boat Ocean Row Events Challenger. The wooden vessel already holds the record of 35 days, 8 hours and 30 minutes from 1992 when it set the time as La Mondiale with a French crew of 11. This is the first part of a three year plan which includes rowing the Indian Ocean in 2008 and the Pacific in 2009, all with the target of raising one million pounds for a selection of charities including MS and Cancer Research.

The crew this time, are a mix of British and Irish and a late decision will see them go with 12 or 14 rowers. The boat has four sets of paired seating and crews will work in shifts with non rowers squeezing into the cramped cabin to catch some sleep. The boat is already having sea trials, after a complete refit, and they hope to arrive at Puerto de Mogan  about mid November to start the final adjustments.

There are 2 rivals for the record, The Oyster Shack Ocean Challenger, an all English team that leaves from La Gomera 2 weeks earlier, and Orca, an American based crew that has yet to declare when they will go and from which island. Mogan will become the crews home for a few weeks and they will no doubt be just as enchanted by the sun kissed modern marina and it’s facillities as countless holiday visitors are.

Population Increase in Mogan

The registered residents in the municipality have increased from 15.771 (2003) to 20.717 (2007), which will mean that the Municipal Council will have 21 councillors instead of the current 17. Besides, this will mean a great economical benefit for Mogán, because the supramunicipal subsidies will increase in more than 20% (comparing with the subsidies received in 2003), since these subsidies are regulated mainly by the number of inhabitants.

This will sensibly increase the budget for investment plans, and for the diverse public services. This is a crucial issue, because one of the main problems the Municipality has had to face in the past is the granting of public services for the “floating population”, i. e. the tourists who visit or spend long seasons in the area.

New beach project in San Agustin started

The beach known as El Cochino, between Playa del Inglés and Las Burras (San Agustin) will be totally closed for 7 months from last Monday. The project aims to create natural beaches, by building underwater jettys that will help to retain the sand.

Playa El Cochino, San Agustin

This is one of several actions that the General Coast Department of Spain is undertaking in the souther coast of Gran Canaria, i. e. the improvement of Meloneras Beach, the extension of the beach promenade in San Agustin or the repair of the promenade at Mirador de las Dunas.

Beyond the beaches, Cardenas is still the key

It’s so easy to think of Gran Canaria as just a beach resort, after all it has some of the most outstanding beaches in the world. It may be a relatively small island, but it has a big range for property investors and home buyers.

Maybe it’s time to let Cardenas estate agents open up other parts of the island to you, for business or pleasure. Telde is a popular inland area on the east coast and has the advantage of being near to Gando airport but still only 50 minutes from the busy southern resort of Puerto Rico. How about a large finca (farm) complete with an orange grove or maybe a 5 bedroom country house with pool.

If you don’t want to go that far north but want to be away from the livelier resort areas, how about Vecindario, where you find plenty of shopping facilities with excellent connections through the highway.

Choose from a four bedroom, two storey house in a new development or plump for a country house, updated with all mod cons and a pool but unmistakedly Canarian in design and with a view out over the mountains.

If you are looking for a business opportunity, maybe you can try one of the newer rising areas such as Patalavaca or look at the many shops, bars and commercial centres in the main tourist centres. Whatever your choice, Cardenas has the local knowledge to ensure you make an informed choice.

Good breakfasts & coffee breaks in Arguineguín

As many saturdays and sundays we like having breakfast outside and the place we like most to go is Panadería La Bella in the Ancora Shopping Centre in Arguineguín.

They have allways very good german bread and pastries, fresh orange juice and an excellent italian coffee. Recently they have added as well different salats.

María Eugenia and Analía are very nice & friendly people,  I can really recommend this place.

Monte Léon, a stroke of property genius

What would you say to a place where you could live in beautiful seclusion, in a luxury villa with stunning views, and plenty of top quality golf courses within easy reach? Sounds too good to be true? Not in Gran Canaria.

Of course you will want to be near the sea and all the shops and nightlife, again, that is not a problem. Cardenas Estate agents have brought all these winning elements together in the southern area of Gran Canaria. Playa del Ingles, Maspalomas, Puerto Rico, and smaller more intimate beach resorts like Arguineguin are all on the south west corner of the island with four of the islands eight golf courses close to hand.

Monte León may be a development you haven’t heard of so it will come as a lovely surprise when you see the modern luxury villas with plenty of garden space and set against the backdrop of rugged hills and lush green vegetation. Serene and relaxing, they are just the place to get away from it all, and a great base for the golf enthusiast.

Monte León, Gran Canaria

Now those four golf courses, you have Anfi Tauro near Puerto Rico and Puerto de Mogan, which has nine holes but will soon have 18. Salobre is near Arguineguin and is a brand new 18 hole delight, and Campo de Golf Maspalomas is a real treat, backing onto the sand dunes national park, with a two storey driving range. Campo de  Meloneras Golf, close to Maspalomas and Arguineguin, has opened recently with a fantastic 18 hole course.

We can’t promise that your game will improve dramatically, but with hours of warm sunshine to play in and an inviting investment property to come home to, you wont be losing too much sleep over your swing.

Property with style, that’s the full Monte Leon

Anyone interested in sunshine holidays, rewarding property investments and sport in the sun has heard all about Gran Canaria but it still has a few gems tucked away that it likes to share with the lucky few. Monte Léon is definitely such a gem, tucked away in the hills of Maspalomas, just above the bustling resorts of Playa del Ingles and Maspalomas, it offers a sedate, relaxed and stress free environment with stunning views. Nature is the star as craggy hillsides and lush green trees and plants make a spectacular backdrop for luxurious villas.

One man who knows Monte Léon better than most ids Antonio Garcia de Cardenas, the now retired founder of the family estate agents, Cardenas. It’s 26 years since his dream first took shape but Antonio told Barrie Mahoney why Monte Léon still excites him.

“I love the feeling of space and the natural landscape of Monte Léon with views right down to the sea is simply marvellous. The area is safe and we have good neighbours here, but it’s nice to have sufficient space between each other to enjoy the peace and quiet.”

Nature is very much alive here, not just in the views and the colours. “There are lots of wild birds in this mountainous area, it’s common to see birds of prey like the buzzard, hovering over the land.”

Monte León, Gran Canaria

If you want to sample natures charms at close quarters, Antonio can also recommend that. “Many people come to this area for walking or cycling, because the roads are safe and the views spectacular. There are tunnels that carry water away from the reservoirs and they are large enough to walk through. By travelling on foot, you can get to parts of the island that are impossible to reach by car, and to discover areas of natural beauty.”

If that sounds like a challenge to you, Monte Léon is just the place to get to grips with nature, but no one will blame you if you prefer just to sit back, relax and enjoy the views.

Gran Canaria, so much to offer

Some people love Gran Canaria for the warm all year climate, some for the beaches and some for the sports and excellent night life, but most love it for all that and more. It’s no wonder that so many people are looking to invest in property in this rich vibrant island.

The Maspalomas and Mogan coasts can offer the best of all worlds to renters and buyers alike as it includes the most popular resorts on the island, Maspalomas, Puerto Rico and the twin delights of Puerto and Playa de Mogan. Puerto Rico is built into a large crescent shaped hillside and features a lively marina and fine sand beach. Mogan will please swimmers and sun worshippers with it’s beach, and will also keep the more active busy in the large marina, where sports & sailing are a big favourite, and then there’s always Mogan village, where Canarian life is still largely undisturbed.

For quieter days and restful nights, Tauro is a good choice and Güigüi is a remote beach well worth the walk, away from the main roads. The jewel in the crown of Mogan must be Monte Léon, set a little inland in the hills, it has individual villas with all the modern amenities but bags of character. All this is set against nature at it’s finest with green plants and trees nestling among craggy hillsides. The views are something special and sunsets seem like a command performance put on especially for you.

Monte Léon, investing in nature

It’s like finding a hidden treasure, that moment when you set eyes on the stunning villas in Monte Léon. Set in the hills of Maspalomas, just 15 minutes away from the wide expanses of beach and the rolling sand dunes of Maspalomas in south Gran Canaria, each villa has it’s own individual character and is set on a large plot.

Just look around and you start to appreciate the beauty of the surroundings, nature at it’s finest with rugged hills and stretches of green trees and plants, it’s hard to believe you are so near to the main resorts of the south and facilities such as shops, restaurants and golf courses.

Whether you go for a 5 bedroom villa or something a little smaller, they are all built with luxury in mind and designed to blend in with the backdrop that nature has so kindly provided.

Cardenas estate agents have 26 years experience in the Gran Canaria property market and their multi lingual staff will help to match you with the perfect property for your needs. there can be few better places to relax and enjoy the serenity and wonderful climate. Views are protected by the law and by natures careful planning, so it makes good sense financially as well to invest in this exclusive area.
