Bristol airport, more choice for Gran Canaria flights

Great news for the many keen visitors to Gran Canaria that are based in the south of England and Wales, from Easter 2009 there will be more flights from Bristol International Airport. Teleticket, a flight only travel company have agreed to add the west country airport to their roster.

It may be the ninth busiest airport in the UK, but its small user friendly size, makes Bristol a popular take off and arrival point for holiday makers and investors with homes in Gran Canaria. Teleticket already have flights to Las Palmas, Gran Canaria from Glasgow, Edinburgh, Gatwick, Manchester and Belfast and their added competition can only help in keeping flight prices keen for money conscious travellers.

The collapse of XL Airways earlier this year was a big blow to Bristol, but the new deal is a show of faith in the airport and Gran Canaria. Demand by UK holiday makers for breaks in Gran Canaria are holding steady as many beleagured families look to the island of all year sun and welcoming beaches, as the perfect tonic to the financial gloom in the UK.

Brit’s sporting dream blooms in Gran Canaria

Joel FreelandIt’s a tall order for a British basketball player to make it in America’s NBA but for 6′11” Joel Freeland, Gran Canaria is proving to be the ideal stage to boost his dream. The 21 year old Great Britain forward is wowing the crowds for kalise Gran Canaria, the surprise pace setters in the Spanish ACB league this season. The Las Palmas based team are at the top of the table ahead of big sporting clubs such as Real Madrid and Barcelona, and Joel’s progress is being closely monitored by his American NBA team Portland Trail Blazers.

Joel was born in Farnham and made his name with Solent Stars, then in February 2006 he was drafted by Portland and loaned out to Gran Canaria to gain experience. Basketball is very popular in Gran Canaria with Kalise attracting several thousand fans to their home games at the Vega de San Jose stadium. Next summer Joel will be lining up against Spain when he competes for GB in the European Championship Finals in Poland, then he hopes to join Portland to play on the biggest stage of all. Before then he intends to help Gran Canaria take the ACB title to send the island faithful wild.

Basketball is just one of the sporting attractions in Gran Canaria, as a player or spectator. Sea sports dominate the coastline from fishing to racing and water skiing, but on dry land golf is a big draw to investors looking to start a new life in the sun. Professional sport enjoys great support in Gran Canaria with several highly placed football teams, topped by UD Las Palmas who play in the Spanish Second Division. No matter how active or restful you want to be, Gran Canaria has all the answers, and in a climate that lends itself to a healthy lifestyle.

The Canary palm tree

Gran Canaria has plenty of astonishing sights to offer, some of them very impressive to the eye. I particularly like this one, a Canary palm tree (miraculously spared by the fire in the summer 2007), which actually takes its roots from a large stone underneath. It can be seen along a lovely mountain road on the hill side almost overhanging Los Palmitos Park. Some meters further, you reach a belvedere commanding an impressive view on the valley and reservoir of Ayagaures,  the surroundings mountains and the “Roque Nublo”, Gran Canaria’s emblematic mountain, all of it within walking distance from Monte Leon, a splendid place to live “in the heights” but with your feet well on solid ground, like this “Phoenix canariensis”.

Legal assistance services increasingly required!

Real estate purchases are sometimes agreed privately. Over the years we have been offering legal assistance also in real estate purchases that have been agreed between a private seller and a buyer without us acting as agents. We are experiencing a growing demand for these services, which are already an important business division in our company. And the fact is that we are better prepared than ever to offer this assistance: our legal department is lead by Daniel García Chagrin (*), Lawyer and Tax Advisor with several years experience exclusively in real estate law and property transactions, inheritances, etc.

You might be told that making a real estate transaction in Gran Canaria is simple, just a matter of visiting the Notary’s office. This is very far from reality, there are legal and tax implications that need to be considered carefully, or otherwise may cost a lot of money and/ or trouble. In any case you should contact a reputed lawyer or real estate professional. At Cardenas we have two in one. We are your trustworthy partner and ensure you a smooth purchase of your property in Gran Canaria, even if you have found it somewhere else!

* Daniel García Chagrin studied Law in Las Palmas and Granada and graduated at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. He later followed a postgraduate course in Tax Law. He joined his parents’ company in 2004 and is nowadays responsible for the legal & tax department providing clients legal and tax support and advice and verifying each sales & rentals transaction. He speaks fluent Spanish, German, English and French. Email: daniel@cardenas-grancanaria.com
