Fiestas del Carmen, Arguineguín, Gran Canaria, 2009

Slowly life gets back to normal after a good week of fiestas in Arguineguin. At last the local population and the tourist who were lucky enough to be in the area around this time of the year can get their beauty sleep again. Sunday morning the patron saint of seamen, La Virgen del Carmen, seemed very pleased to see the sea of people in the port of Arguineguin when they took her down from the church, made her bow in front of the tiny altar of the port and then placed her in her boat to parade all the way to Puerto Mogan.

If you have never seen this spectacle, you must come and visit our beautiful island once out of the winter season in July, when the nights of fiestas and balmy breezes seem to last for ever and the sea is so inviting with its refreshing waves!

Fiestas del Carmen, Puerto de Mogán, Gran Canaria, 2009

Once again this hot summer afternoon our group of friends met together to celebrate the annual arrival of the Virgin of Puerto Mogan.  This colourful event marks the beginning of the local fiestas which this year run from 24th July to 2nd August.

The Virgin is brought with huge excitement over the water from Arguineguin accompanied by fireworks and a flotilla of gaily-bedecked boats of all sizes, whose owners enjoy themselves thoroughly with on-board barbecues, music, dancing and a lot of laughter.

Windsurf champs head for Pozo, Gran Canaria – PWA

See video by Noticanarias on YouTube

The south of Gran Canaria is rightly famous for its fabulous weather and beaches, not only does it turn tourists into investors and residents, it also attracts top sports stars. From July 10 to 17 the Gran Canaria Windsurf Grand Slam takes place on Playa de Pozo Izquierdo beach between Maspalomas and Playa del Ingles.

The beach is a meca for international windsurf stars, and this is the 10th year the event, backed by the Professional Windsurf Association, has been held there. This years entrants include the local glamorous Las Palmas twins, Iballa and Daida Ruano. Men and women will compete in wave and slalom categories, and as the action takes place fairly close to the shoreline, it’s a great spectacle to watch.

This is all part of the vibrant life of the south of Gran Canaria, the most popular area for holiday makers to buy property. Cardenas Real Estate, have been local experts her since they formed in 1980, and they can give you inside advice about the social and sporting life of the south, and of course find you the best properties.

New Handicraft market in Mogan

A charming and colourful addition to Puerto Mogan.  The new handicraft market, which opened on Monday 29th June, will now be held every Monday from 10.00 to 14.00 above the underground car park, just down from the open air bus station.  Here you will be able to have a leisurely browse from stall to stall where you will find on display a wide range of typically Canarian products, handmade crafts and jewellery, Canarian wines, homemade pastries and bread, vegetables and fruit and much more.  A delightful way to spend a morning.
