A highly recommended day out in Guayadeque

While most of the visitors to our island come to our beautiful golden beaches in the south of the island to enjoy the sun and the clear blue waters of the Atlantic many leave without experiencing the beauty in the heart of the island.  One of the secret gems of Gran Canaria is Guayadeque located in the gorge between Aguimes and Ingenio this area was originally home to the Guanche race of aborigines who were the first recorded inhabitants on the island. The entire valley is known for its pre-Hispanic archaeological sites, valuable endemic species of flora and fauna is classed as a national monument and is a protected area ensuring that it remains unchanged for future generations. Home to a multitude of naturally formed caves that gave shelter to the island’s first settlers to which today their modern counterparts still continue the same basic lifestyle as their ancestors, only accompanied in their daily routines by the curious visitors.

On the way up through the valley one will encounter the Museum of Guayadeque which includes exhibits that cover archaeology, architecture, geology, fauna, flora and traditions, amongst others.  A stop in one of the various cave restaurants is a must, not only for the delicious traditional regional dishes that they have on offer but also for their unique location built into the rocks.  Restaurant “Tagoror” is a favourite and is located at the top near to the end of the valley.

The lighthouse of Maspalomas will be, from beginning of 2010, an ethnographic centre in which there will be both permanent and temporary exhibitions, but always with the aim of enabling to visit it several times without seeing the same exhibitions; in fact the Gran Canaria Council (Cabildo) has an ethnographic found with over 5.000 samples.

The centre will have 3 large theme lounges:

A)    External vision of the Canary Islands in ancient times

B)    The Canaries, reference for scientific expeditions and health station

Gran Canaria, a pearl of nature for divers

Visitors flock to Gran Canaria for the beauty of the landscapes but many are unaware of the further beauties that lay beneath the atlantic that laps at the shores. Fotosub Gran Canaria 2009, based in Costa Mogan brought together some of the best underwater photographers in the World for this 5th annual event, running from September 29 to October 4.

Couples from 12 countries competed against each other to unlock the secrets of the deep at classic dive sites such as Los Biotipos de Arguineguin and Los Pecios de Mogan. The event lured the best snappers from Spain, France, England, Portugal and Italy among others. A Festival of Underwater Cinema , on the beach, was just one of many events arranged to support ther main competition, and to entertain the many visitors that Fotosub attracted.

You don’t have to an expert photographer or diver to enjoy the undersea World of Gran Canaria, there are many excursion and dive centres that cater for beginners and the more advanced, and if you don’t want to get wet, there are even glass bottom boats that will be your window on an amazing seascape of animal and plant life.
