The Italians are as keen as they come for competitive cycling, so it was nice to see them hold one of their prestige events, Gran Fondo del Sur, in Gran Canaria. The weather and the quiet rural roads, attract around 200,000 cyclists a year to Gran Canaria, some just enjoy a casual tour but others like to pit themselves against the more challenging mountain roads. Gran Fondo del Sur was in the leisurely category, and groups of 3 cyclists went off at a time to enjoy the journey. They were able to sample the delights of Vecindario, Cruce de Arinaga, Aquimes, El Cardon, Santa Lucia, Tirajana, Fataga, and Masplaomas.
