Summer is party season in south Gran Canaria
Think summer is the quiet season in south Gran Canaria? Well, lots of people do go home for the summer, but that doesn’t mean there’s nothing to do.
Summer in the Mogán Municipio is local party season and also the period when it hosts big sporting events. Here’s a list of the big summer events in Mogán and Arguineguín.
June 23 is the night when the whole of Gran Canaria heads to the beach for bonfires, fireworks, and midnight swims.
In the Mogán Municipio it’s celebrated at Playa de Mogán, although you can expect a local party on Las Marañuelas beach too.
Remember to walk backwards into the water at midnight. It brings good luck for the rest of the year.
Fiestas del Carmen 2016
Every fishing town and village in Gran Canaria celebrates the Fiestas del Carmen in July.
In the Mogán Municipio events start on July 10 and last until the 17th.
Highlights include processions, live music, a water festival and lots of activities for kids. We’ll publish the program as soon as it is out.
The boat procession
The highlight of the Fiestas del Carmen is a boat procession that takes the Carmen icon out to sea. It’s an ancient tradition amongst sailors and fishermen and they always stop to give thanks for the Virgin’s protection and remember people lost at sea.
In 2016, the procession is on Sunday 17 July and leaves Arguineguín at around 11.30. It stops at El Pajar bay for the ceremony and continues on to Puerto de Mogán. This is the only day that you’re allowed to swim inside Mogan marina.
Traditional Canarian fiestas, called romerias, happen during the summer and include street processions, traditional music and dance, and lots of food and drink.
Here’s the list of the main summer romerias in the Mogan municipio.
Pueblo Mogán: Saturday, June 4: San Antonio el Chico. The main event is a brass band procession where people carry branches (bajada de la rama). Program here.
Tasarte · Saturday, June 18: Romería de San Juan Bautista.
Arguineguín · Saturday, July 9: Romeria terrestre Nuestra Sra. del Carmen.
Soria · Saturday, August 13: Romería in honour of the Inmaculada Concepción y San Andrés
Over 1000 people take part in this night time hill race that starts and finishes by Las Marañuelas beach in Arguineguín.
In 2016, it’s on Saturday, July 2. The main 24KM race starts at 20.30. There are still a few places left if you feel like giving it a go.
A half triathlon that starts with a swim at Amadores beach, the Challenge Mogán race is on September 17.
This year’s event is a trial of what should become a full triathlon and the Mogán Municipio’s big international sporting event.
Open Water swims
South Gran Canaria hosts at least one open water swim, known as a travesia, this summer. Dates are yet to be confirmed but we’ll let you know.
